Shingle Shield Max™ is a professional-grade, water-based roof preservation coating formulated for direct application to eligible asphalt shingles. The proprietary PosiCoat™ resin system penetrates and anchors to the shingle surface, then cures into a clear, breathable, flexible, hydrophobic film. The cured film improves water resistance, helps reduce granule erosion, and provides resistance to ultraviolet exposure, thermal cycling, microbial growth, and environmental wear.
2Recommended Use
- Residential and commercial asphalt-shingle roofing systems that are structurally sound, serviceable, sloped, and capable of positive drainage.
- Preventive maintenance and roof-preservation applications on eligible asphalt shingles.
- Do not apply to flat roofs, unsuitable low-slope roofs, roofs that hold or pond water, or surfaces without positive drainage.
- Not intended for excessively deteriorated, structurally unsound, leaking, or end-of-service-life roofs.
- Not intended as a substitute for required repairs or roof replacement.
3Features and Performance Characteristics
- Clear, low-gloss finish with a light sheen that does not materially alter the underlying shingle color.
- Helps reduce granule loss and surface erosion.
- Provides an added water-resistant protective layer while remaining breathable.
- UV stable and non-yellowing.
- Helps resist mold and mildew growth on the cured film.
- Cured film flexes with normal substrate movement; it does not restore flexibility to aged shingles.
- Provides added resistance to impact and windborne debris; it is not represented as preventing all hail damage.
- Water-based, low VOC, non-flammable, and VOC compliant in all 50 states and Canada.
- Cured surface may be maintained using compatible mild detergents and appropriate low-pressure cleaning methods.
4Packaging, Storage and Shelf Life
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Keep containers tightly closed and away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, sparks, open flame, and oxidizing materials. Keep out of reach of children. If the product appears hardened, irreversibly separated, contaminated, or otherwise abnormal, contact Vital Coat before use.

6Surface Assessment and Preparation
Initial roof assessment
- Perform a comprehensive roof inspection to confirm that the roof and shingles are structurally sound, serviceable, and appropriate for treatment.
- Repair all active leaks, loose or missing shingles, flashing defects, penetrations, exposed fasteners, and structural defects before application.
- Confirm that the roof is sloped, drains positively, and does not retain or pond water.
- Verify with the shingle manufacturer whether application could affect any existing shingle warranty.
- Do not apply over excessively deteriorated, loose, broken, or end-of-service-life shingles.
Cleaning and preparation
- The roof must be completely clean and free of loose debris, active organic growth, moss, lichen, mold, mildew, oils, prior water repellents, and contaminants that could interfere with penetration or adhesion.
- The professional contractor may select a shingle-compatible cleaning solution and method. Industry-standard low-pressure cleaning is recommended to reduce unnecessary granule loss.
- All cleaning solutions must be thoroughly rinsed from the roof. Residual sodium hypochlorite, bleach, detergent, or other cleaning chemicals may negatively affect adhesion, appearance, and coating performance.
- The roof must be completely dry before application. Damp substrates can cause haze, blushing, poor absorption, or loss of adhesion.
7Application Conditions
Temperatures outside the optimal range can change working time, drying, and cure development. Warmer conditions generally accelerate drying; cooler conditions slow drying and cure.

Product preparation
- Do not dilute.
- Stir thoroughly before use to ensure uniform consistency.
- Use professional spray equipment capable of maintaining consistent pressure and a uniform pattern. Tip selection, orifice size, and spray pattern remain the professional installer’s responsibility based on equipment and roof profile.
Application technique
- Begin at the lowest point of the roof and work upward. This allows incidental runs to move onto wet material below, helping the coating blend and reducing visible shading caused by different drying rates.
- Hold the spray tip approximately 8–10 inches from the surface, adjusting as needed for the equipment and roof profile.
- Spray parallel to the horizontal shingle lines using steady, even strokes across manageable sections.
- Maintain approximately 20% overlap between passes. Do not stall or slow at the turn of the stroke, which can cause buildup, puddles, or runs.
- Maintain constant pressure. Stop and correct equipment that drips, splatters, leaks, or produces an uneven pattern. Inspect, clean, or replace worn and partially clogged tips immediately.
- Continue upward to a natural stopping point. Start the next section at the low side and blend it into the active wet edge of the previous section.
- Adjust the wand angle as needed to reach shingle overlaps and creases without forcing excessive product beneath shingles.
- Back-roll overspray only when necessary to correct localized excess and achieve a uniform appearance. Use caution not to remove granules, which will cause noticeable shading in the roof.
9Coverage and Optional Finish Coat
Coverage rates are based on standard three-tab asphalt shingles. Architectural shingles, irregular textures, degraded profiles, or highly absorptive surfaces may require additional material. Actual usage must be monitored during application.
Optional finish coat procedure
- Allow the first coat to dry for at least 30 minutes before applying the optional finish coat.
- Recommended recoat window at 77°F and 50% relative humidity: 30 minutes to 2 hours.
- Apply the finish coat thinner than the first coat at 300–450 ft²/gal.
- Apply parallel to the shingle lines and offset the second-coat passes from the first-coat pattern edges to reduce visible spray transitions.
10Drying and Cure
11Property Protection and Overspray Control
- Cover or relocate vehicles, patio furniture, windows, siding, landscaping, pools, decks, and other property within the potential drift zone.
- Mask and isolate solar panels, skylights, roof-mounted HVAC equipment, mechanical ventilation systems, intake fans, and compressor coils.
- Use drop cloths below roof edges and use cardboard shields, spray guards, or edging tools where needed.
- Avoid heavy passes near eaves and roof perimeters that could cause runoff over fascia, gutters, soffits, patios, or personal property.
- Establish a protected staging and loading station using heavy plastic sheeting or containment trays. Do not load sprayers over unprotected driveways, patios, decks, or sidewalks.
- Keep as much product and equipment as practical contained within the trailer or utility vehicle.
- Do not flush or clean equipment near landscaping, lawns, gardens, drains, paved surfaces, or customer property.
12Cleanup and Accidental Exposure
Application equipment
The contractor may select a cleaner compatible with the application equipment and its components. Thoroughly remove cleaner residue and allow cleaned components to dry before introducing Shingle Shield Max. Do not allow sodium hypochlorite, bleach, detergent, solvent, or other cleaner residue to contaminate the coating. Once cured in equipment, the coating may require mechanical removal.
Wet spills, drips, or overspray
Act immediately. Saturate the affected area with clean water and wipe with a clean, wet cloth. Repeat rinsing while the product remains wet. Hot, soapy water may be used on compatible surfaces. Once cured, the coating becomes extremely difficult or impossible to remove from some surfaces.
Cured material and acetone
Cured spots on compatible, untinted glass may be carefully removed with an appropriate flat-bladed window scraper held at a shallow angle. Do not use metal blades on tinted glass or plastic windows.
13Roof Care and Maintenance
- Inspect the roof twice each year and after major storms, high winds, hail, or heavy debris impact.
- Keep valleys, gutters, and downspouts free of leaves, pine needles, moss, and other organic debris.
- Trim branches that touch or overhang the roof and address pest access.
- Repair loose tabs, damaged shingles, failed caulking, and flashing defects promptly.
- Treat early organic growth using a compatible, non-acidic roof cleaner and appropriate low-pressure methods.
- Keep ridge, soffit, and static roof vents clear and operational.
- Use guarded, non-metallic snow-removal tools where snow removal is necessary. Do not scrape the coating or granule surface.
- Never use high-pressure washing, abrasive mechanical cleaning, or harsh stripping agents on the treated roof.
14Health and Safety
Read and follow the current Safety Data Sheet and container label before handling, mixing, or applying this product. Authorized Installers are responsible for their workplace-safety programs, employee training, fall protection, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Wear chemical-resistant safety goggles or a face shield, protective gloves, long sleeves, and other PPE appropriate to the work.
- Use OSHA-compliant fall protection and safe roof-access practices.
- Maintain a clean, organized, adequately ventilated work and staging area.
- Keep children, pets, and unauthorized persons away from the work area.
- Use extreme caution on treated surfaces, which can become slippery when wet.
